BENTON COUNTY HISTORY

History Of Benton County

Benton County, Indiana, has a rich history that dates back to the early 19th century. The county was officially formed in 1840, named after U.S. Senator Thomas H. Benton. Its first county seat was Oxford, but after a contentious dispute, it was moved to Fowler in 18743. The current courthouse in Fowler, an architecturally impressive building, was constructed in 1874.

Benton County is known for its agricultural landscape, consisting of low rolling hills. It became part of the Lafayette, Indiana, Metropolitan Statistical Area and experienced significant development over the years. In the 21st century, it has gained recognition for its contributions to renewable energy, with the establishment of the Benton County Wind Farm in 2008 and the Fowler Ridge Wind Farm in 2009, making it a hub for wind energy in the region.

Today, Benton County continues to thrive with a focus on agriculture, education, and renewable energy, maintaining its small-town charm while contributing to the broader economic and environmental goals of Indiana and the United States. The county’s population, as of 2020, stands at 8,719, reflecting a community that values its history and looks forward to a sustainable future.
